Reinforced frame with a brushed black beaver felt exterior, trimmed along both top edges with a 45 mm wide band of moire black silk ribbon, with raised insignias on the flattened platforms either end, consisting of six rows of large gold wire bullion with gilt cyphers of Grand Duke Louis on their blue wool centres, the right side with two strips of fine gold-coloured bullion wire, finished with a gilt button illustrating the cypher of Grand Duke Louis, the strips overlaying a red and gray ribbed rosette at the opposite end near the top edge, the inside with a white leather sweatband, with the ends of the sweatband sewn together on the right side, most of the identifying mark on the left side of the sweatband having worn off, paper strip glued in place at the front on the body of the bicorn under the sweatband, with the owner's name inscribed in handwritten black ink "De Weigand", the dome lined in white satin and displaying the embossed gold stamped "H. SCHUCHARD DARMSTADT." maker mark with the Hesse coat-of-arms in the centre, measuring 180 mm x 445 mm x 180 mm in height. The exterior exhibits wear and mold spotting on the beaver felt, the interior with soiling and wear present on the silk lining and leather sweatband from active use, with all fabrics in the bicorn free of fabric interruptions.
