Footnote: Robert John McCalmont was born in Saskenham, Ontario. He enlisted as a Private (7079) with the 2nd Special Service Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment for service in South Africa, on October 20, 1899, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of 24, naming his next-of-kin as his brother, William James McCalmont of Montreal, Quebec, stating that he had previous service with the 6th Battalion Rifles (re-designated the 6th Regiment The Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles on May 1, 1900), that he was Single, that his religion was Presbyterian and that his trade was that of Harness Maker. After fourteen months service, he was discharged on December 25, 1900. McCalmont was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps: Paardeberg and Cape Colony. He is also on record as having had a legal representative file a Land Application on his behalf, listing him under his 6th Battalion Rifles service number (6291).
