Footnote: Alexander McKay Gunn was born on January 12, 1885 in Owen Sound, Ontario. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 44th Infantry Battalion, on December 21, 1914 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, naming his next-of-kin as his sister, Mrs. L. (Elizabeth) Penner of Owen Sound, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Fireman. He was a Lieutenant and later, a Captain, with the 25th Battalion, New Brunswick Regiment, when he was died on August 23, 1917. He is remembered with honour at the Vimy Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France. At the base of the memorial, these words appear in French and in English: "TO THE VALOUR OF THEIR COUNTRYMEN IN THE GREAT WAR AND IN MEMORY OF THEIR SIXTY THOUSAND DEAD THIS MONUMENT IS RAISED BY THE PEOPLE OF CANADA." Inscribed on the ramparts of the Vimy Memorial are the names of over 11,000 Canadian soldiers who were posted as "'missing, presumed dead" in France. He is commemorated on page 248 on the First World War Book of Remembrance. Gunn is documented as being awarded the 1915-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal posthumously, the Trio not included here.
