War materials with yellow and black paint, maker marked "CORDESIUS & ZONEN BATAVIA" in the Dutch East Indies on the reverse, illustrating the Royal Dutch crown above "NIL", flanked by the dates "1945" and "1946", 33.6 mm x 49.8 mm, one of two lugs intact, the other has part of the lug remaining, chipping in the black paint, very fine.Footnote: The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL = "Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger") was the military force maintained by the Netherlands in its colony of the Netherlands East Indies (also known as the Dutch East Indies, and now modern Indonesia). This badge was worn by members of the KNIL who volunteered to stay in Indonesia from the end of the Second World War in 1945, through 1946. Most were former prisoners of the occupying Japanese forces.
