Late World War II Japanese Naval Dagger with a total length 39.5cm; The hilt is crafted out of plastic,dating this dagger to the later war years. The blade is reasonably sharp, with considerable wear throughout although it remains solid. The leather sheath is decorated with brass plating with the gilding intact featuring cherry blossom leafs. This dagger has been apart and thus, the cross guard assembly is loose. It features manufacturer's markings. Overall good condition showing age, patina, and moderate wear.
Footnote: Great M1883 Imperial Japanese Navy Officer's dagger originally authorized in 1883 (Meiji 16). Earlier models featured a shark skin sheath and ray skin hilt, due to saving strategies integrated in the later years of the war, the shark skin was replaced with leather, and the hilt with synthesized plastic.
