A Royal Highlanders Glengarry Bonnet by R. Mackie & Co

This glengarry bonnet has a black wool upper, with a 22mm wide black reinforced trim along the open edge of the cap. On the left side is a crest of Saint Andrew’s cross with a star - in the center is a figure of St. Andrews, with his cross, surrounded under a crown by the motto “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit” (No one provokes me with impunity), scrolls bear the words “The Royal Highlanders of Canada” and “13th Batt 1st Canadian Division”. The bonnet is topped with a red toorie, with dual black ribbons at the rear. The inside is lined with a brownish-black cotton, with a red production sticker bearing the maker's markings “6 ¼ R. Mackie & Co 1916”. The bonnet measures 25 cm x 10 cm. Condition is near extremely fine, being completely original, but needing some repairs to attach one of the dual black ribbons to the rear again. Footnote: The 13th Battalion, along with the remaining Battalions of 1st Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, were in active service during the First War on the Western Front from April 1915 until armistice in November, 1918. It first saw action at the Battle of Ypres in April 1915, during which the German Imperial Army first used chlorine gas. Although the neighboring French divisions fled from the gas, the Canadian 1st Division heroically held the line. Thereafter, the 13th Battalion of the 1st Division were involved in every major engagement involving the Canadian Corps, including the Somme in 1916, Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele in 1917, and the Pursuit to Mons in 1918.
