An 1813 German Imperial Carl Theodor Körner Memorial Medal

In bronze; the obverse depicts Körner standing beside his horse while pulling his sabre out of the sheath with a lyric from his own works, the “Sabre song”; the reverse depicts a leftward facing bust of Körner inscribed “he Fell for Germany’s Freedom - 26.Aug.1813”; engraver marked "F. Hörnlein" on the reverse, measuring 56 mm in diameter; light contact marks, extremely fine. Footnote: Carl Theodor Körner was born on September 23, 1791 in Dresden, Saxony. He was a German poet and playwright, famous for drama's in the Burgtheatre, particularly expressed through his songs in the freedom struggle against Napoleonic domination. He was later described as "a singer and hero" when he died fighting for the Lützow Free Corps in a skirmish with Napoleonic troops in the Rosenow Forest near Lützow, Mecklenburg on August 26, 1813.
