A 1909 Gordon Bennett Balloonist Cup Medallion

A Gordon Bennett intercontinental balloon race medallion; in silver; the obverse depicting a balloon flight crew, artist marked “Hugenin”; the reverse marked “OGN”, “Hugenin”, and “H.H”; measuring 40 mm in diameter; contact marks and light patina; overall better than very fine condition.

Footnote: The Gordon Bennett (Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett) was established in Paris, France, on September 30, 1906, and is thereby the world’s oldest gas balloon race. The 1909 race commenced on October 3rd in Zurich, Switzerland, with contenders travelling a total distance of 1,887.60 km. (C:45)
