A 1st German Young Poultry Show Prize; Hanover 1934

Measuring 11.7 x 38.5 cm; Date of item: 1934; Condition: very good, negligeable signs of aging. The Blue Ribbon of Hanover, a prize given out at the Deutsche Junggeflügelschau (German Young Poultry Show). Interestingly, there is a spelling error on the ribbon, as a second “g” is missing. This specimen is from the very 1st poultry show in 1934. The event is a fair intended for breeders of birds to show their most beautiful breeds. It continues to this day: the 135th show is scheduled for late October 2016. The cloth ribbon is white on the reverse and light blue on the obverse. Golden twisted cord fringes are attached at the base. On the top it is held by an 18 cm long metal pole, attached via four blue-grey and white loops. The ribbon shows an imperial eagle with a swastika on its chest at the top. The words “1. Deutsche Jungeflügelschau” (note the missing “g”) (1st German Young Poultry Show) follow. Underneath is a domed building surrounded by rays, probably depicting the center part of the New Town Hall of Hanover, built between 1901 and 1913, and one of the most beautiful and recognizable buildings of the city. A swastika was placed at the top of the dome. Instead of the entry to the building the ribbon shows the Hanover city coat of arms. Below are the words “Blaues Band von Hannover 1934” (Blue Ribbon of Hanover 1934).
