A First War Medal Grouping to the 42nd Canadian Infantry Battalion

1914-15 Star (419174 Pte M. STEWART. 42/CAN:INF:); British War Medal (419174 PTE. M. STEWART. 42-CAN.INF.); and Victory Medal (419174 PTE. M. STEWART. 42-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, replacement ribbons, dark patina and edge wear on the BWM, spotting and edge nicks on the VM, contact marks, very fine.

Footnote: Malcolm Stewart was born on May 20, 1890 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a resident of Toronto, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (419174) with the 37th Infantry Battalion, on June 10, 1915 at Niagara Camp, at the age of 25, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Mrs. M. Stewart of Toronto, stating that he belonged to an Active Militia, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Plumber. In regards to his right knee, it was noted during his medical examination that he had "large bony masses at the upper end of the tibia" but that it "apparently causes no trouble". The Battalion was raised in Sault Ste. Marie in Northern Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Niagara Falls, Ontario under the authority of G.O. 86, July 1, 1915. The Battalion sailed November 27, 1915 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel C.F. Bick with a strength of 40 officers and 1,104 other ranks. In England, the Battalion was absorbed by the 39th Infantry Battalion, with Private Stewart later being transferred to the 42nd Infantry Battalion "Royal Highlanders of Canada". Private Stewart survived the war and for his First World War service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
