The Army book is signed on August 28, 1939 by Senior Lieutenant and Battery Chief of the 1. Battery of the Artillery Regiment 96. The NSDAP book is signed on March 20, 1939. There is also a facsimile signature of the Reichsschatzmeister (National Treasurer) Franz Xaver Schwarz (1875–1947). The book contains stamps for membership fees from 1939 to 1944.

In February 1940 he was promoted to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal). Later in the war he switched from the army to the SS, where he held the rank of SS-Sturmmann in the 8th Company of the SS Artillery Training and Reserve Regiment.
