British-made, steel, non-magnetic, with a raw edge, in greenish-blue with a smooth finish, with a browning copper 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Regiment Overseas cap badge affixed to the front. Inside, steel-framed cradle supporting a blackened canvas liner with underlying burlap support and leather backer, mesh support with drawstring, padded liner in the dome, without maker stampings on the steel. The leather chinstrap has been severed at the centrepoint, the left side remaining intact, the right side having been lost to time, while the hardware on both sides also remains intact. Helmet measures 282 mm x 298 mm x 120 mm, exhibiting a few moderate dents on top, surface rust and paint chipping overall, the padded liner in the dome chattered, the canvas liner age soiled but remaining intact, as worn.
Footnote: The 4th Mounted Rifle Battalion was organized on March 15, 1915, in Toronto, Ontario. It served in France and Holland and was disbanded on November 15, 1920. They were initially issued with badges with "4 C.M.R. OVERSEAS" (4th Canadian Mounted Rifles), which were later altered to "4 C.M.R.R. OVERSEAS" (4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Regiment). (C:4)
