A Second War German SS-Wehrgeologenbataillon identification tag; in zink; stamped “11 (mot) SS-Wehr. Geo. Batl. 500” on both sides of the triple slotted disc; three drill holes; measuring 71 mm x 50 mm; very fine condition.

Footnote: Heinrich Himmler ordered the creation of the 500 (mot) SS Geologist Bataillon in 1941. It was established in 1942 in Hamburg-Langerhorn, half was sent to Italy in the Reggio Emilia in summer of 1943, with the rest being sent to the Breton region in France in March 1944. Little is known about their actual tasks, although some historians believe their primary task was to evaluate soil condition for a variety of purposes, whether for military, architectural, or agricultural use. Little is known about its fate.
