A 1. Nachrichten Abteilung Lettische SS Freiwilligen Division identification tag; in zink; stamped “1. Nacht. Abt. Lett SS Frw Div” on both sides of the triple slotted disc; measuring 71 mm x 50 mm; very fine condition.
Footnote: Heinrich Himmler formed the Latvian Legion (Lettische SS-Freiwilligen Legion in January 1943, despite unlawful constriction regulations that were in place in Latvia at the time. The Latvian region fought in the surrounding areas of Leningrad, without success, and was then transferred to Danzig in September 1944, where the division continued to fight on the Pomeranian Wall defences. Surviving men of the company (approximately 4,500) surrendered to advancing Americans on April 27, 1945.
