Knight’s Cross recipient, 21 x 29.7 cm. Date of item: Period of Nazi Germany. Condition: excellent. A signed photo of SS-Hauptsturmführer Siegfried Brosow (1918–2008). Brosow joined the SS in 1937. During the Battle of France as an Untersturmführer he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, and during the assault on Moscow he was promoted to Obersturmführer and awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class. Brosow was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on Nov 13th, 1943 while commanding the 1st Company of the SS Panzer Sapper Battalion 2 of the 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich”. During a battle with the Russians on Sep 13th when they managed to breach the German lines in a strategically important position, Brosow led his men, a troop of only 45, to a counterattack into the Russian flanks, fighting in close combat in trenches with submachine pistols and hand grenades. When the attack came to a halt, Brosow ordered a night-assault with flamethrowers, eventually clearing the trenches and repelling the Russian soldiers, thus keeping the Russians from using the only road leading to the Vorskla River and preventing a split of the German division.
