A Pre First War 8th Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment Officer's Sword 1900-1911; Named

Measuring 1,110 mm with the scabbard on, this sword features a 820 mm long, curved and fullered, nickel-plated steel blade, magnetic, with a blade spine and a single dull edge, the blade remaining bright and crisp, and having an extremely sharp tip. The blade's obverse ricasso is maker marked "W.K.& C" (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co., Solingen) with the early version of the company's insignia, incorporating two emblems side-by-side, a crowned king at the left and a knight at the right. The obverse of the blade is engraved in Gothic script "Ernst Volhene, 8.Bair.Feld-Artill.Rgt.1910/11." (Ernst Volhere, 8th Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment 1910-1911) flanked by cross cannons at the left and a cavalryman on a horse at the right end, with ornate framing with a floral motif on both ends. The reverse of the blade is engraved with a cavalryman on a horse followed by a team of six horses with cavalryman, the six horses pulling a four-wheeled artillery piece with five men aboard, the team facing to the left, flanked by three horses heads at the left and also incorporating an ornate framing with a floral motif throughout. The spine also has a floral motif. The blade itself retains its crossgraining, exhibiting the usual in and out runner marks, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, natural shine, scattered surface wear on both sides near the tip, better than very fine. Dark red felt buffer pad shows edge wear on the obverse side but remains intact. The crossguard with quillon at one end, the other end forming the guard, curving around and tucking into the pommel, with a slot in the arch of the guard near the pommel, the straight edge forming the spine and housing a black synthetic grip with seventeen ribs and is completed by the pommel, the hardware itself in a magnetic silvered metal. The sword measures 950 mm in length and weighs 544 grams overall, exhibiting silvering wear and spotting on the silvered hardware. The scabbard has a durable black painted metal body, magnetic, with a flattened u-shaped finial, suspension ring and bracket protruding from the wrap-around loop, the throat plate held firmly in place via two screws, measuring 870 mm in length and weighing 444 grams, showing surface wear and contact marks overall.
