This is a textbook example of a mint and fine quality manufacture German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold) by Fritz Zimmermann; the obverse with a fine double-overlaid sunburst pattern with eight points, and the center with a black enameled rotated (mobile) swastika, with the enamels well preserved without chipping or detectable contact marks of any kind; within a stamped gilded circular wreath impressed with oak leaves, ribbons, and the introduction year “1941”; the inner and outer sides of the wreath feature a thin red enameled rings with a silver core in the middle; the reverse with its trademark Zimmermann manufacture four rivets, with a tapered vertical pinback, with a functional barrel hinge and a thick, slightly rounded catch; marked “20” for “Fritz Zimmermann, Stuttgart” on the reverse of the pin; measuring 63.06 mm x 63.13 mm; weighing 43.8 grams. In its original case of issue; constructed of heavy pressed paper with a lightly textured black faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the outside edge of the lid embossed with a fine golden line around all four sides; lined interior lid with a slotted medal bed to allow for proper award seating; functional spring catch with stud release; fully intact interior fabric hinge cover; functional external metal hinge; the medal bed worn on the four edges where the German Cross makes contact; measuring 107 mm x 107 mm; overall near mint condition.
