A third reich period “Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen”; oval bronze; on a loop for suspension; with its period original ribbon; the obverse with a crossed shovel and sword in the centre, and a concrete pillbox/bunker directly below, as well as with the German national eagle above, all within an oak leaf wreath; the reverse inscribed “Für Arbeit zum schutze Deutschlands” (For labour for the protection of Germany) within an oak wreath; measuring 45.46 mm x 32.86 mm; weighing 17.4 grams. Accompanied by its original paper wrappings and its original packet of issue; the packet with “Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen” printed in black gothic lettering on the obverse with the maker’s mark on the reverse removed; measuring 105 mm x 60 mm; overall extremely fine condition.

 

Footnote: The maker’s label on this packet of issue has been purposefully removed from the packet. This was done by factory workers who sold these awards to American GI’s during the post war period who wanted to keep the origin of these awards hidden.
