An Early Type Knight’s Cross to the War Merit Cross by Zimmermann; Smooth Suspender Variant - A fine quality, early manufacture “Ritterkreuz des Kriegsverdienstkreuzes” by a desired maker; Maltese cross in silver (marked “800” on the bottom arm for silver content); variant suspended by a smooth (not ribbed) suspender mount and loop; the obverse with a raised border of oak leaves centrally on the award, with a raised mobile swastika in the centre; the reverse with the same circular raised border of oak leaves bearing the institution date “1939” in raised numbering; maker marked “20” for “Fritz Zimmermann” on the edge of the lower arm; measuring 53.24 mm x 53.44 mm; weighing 29 grams. Accompanied by its period original neck ribbon; constructed of red-white-black-white-red vertically ribbed weaving; with thin laces attached to both ends to be tied around the neck; overall in gently worn, extremely fine condition.
