A fine textbook example of an Iron Cross 1914 First Class “Eisernes Kreuz 1914 1. Klasse” Prinzen size; screwback version; white metal cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened brass core (non-magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central “W”, with the re-institution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm; the reverse plain, with a threaded stud soldered onto the slightly vaulted reverse and a crew-plate; measuring 33.32 mm x 33.44 mm; weighing 11.3 grams. Accompanied by a patriotic carton box; constructed of printed cardstock, depicting an iron Cross 1914 Second Class with its ribbon tied around a tri-colour imperial flag before a laurel twig; the inside of the box lined; measuring 61 mm x 41 mm; the cross with only very minor contact marks on the core, and with limited loss to the silver finish on the reverse; a lightly worn example in extremely fine condition.
