A 1821 issue Hesse Kassel War Merit Medal for war participation for the war 1814-1815 (Kriegsdenkmünze für Kämpfer); the obverse with the royal crown, along with the royal monogram “KWII” (Kurfürst Wilhelm II), inscribed “Seinen tapfern Hessen 1821”, with an open ended laurel wreath; the reverse is depicts cross pattée with a laurel wreath, inscribed “1814-1815” in the center, along with a knight’s helmet on the upper arm, inscribed “Gott brach des Feindes Macht und Hessen ward befreit” (God broke the will of the enemy, and Hessen was freed); inscribed “Aus Erobertem Geschütz” (From conquered cannons) on the edge of the coin; on a broad, horizontally pierced ball suspension, with a loop, and a period original ribbon; measuring 28.98 mm in diameter; weighing 15.5 grams; bruised; in overall better than fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
