A very fine quality manufacture 1908-1918 issue Bavarian Merit Order of the Crown Knight’s Cross (Verdienstorden der Bayrischen Krone Ritterkreuz); a silver gilt eight-armed Maltese cross with white and red enamels, as well as a green enameled laurel wreath between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a center silver gilt medallion depicting a rightward facing bust of King Max I. Joseph, surrounded by a ring of red enamels, inscribed “Max. Jos. Bojoariae Rex” (Max(imilian) Jos(eph) König von Bayern) in gilt lettering; the reverse with a center medallion of white and light blue checkered enamels depicting a gilt Bavarian crown, surrounded by a ring of red enamels, inscribed “Virtus Et Honos” (Virtue and Honour); suspended from a swivel crown suspension, with a horizontally pierced ball and loop, and with its period original ribbon; measuring 38.97 mm x 59.93 mm; weighing 23.1 grams;marked 900 on ring, the enamels extremely well preserved, with some of its original gilt having worn off through age and wear; in overall near mint condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
