A very well preserved example of circa 1880's issue Bavarian Military House Order of St. George Breast Star; with silver Maltese cross with silver ball finals; the obverse with a center medallion of white enamels, with a red enameled cross in the center, and blue enameled arms; with white and blue chequered decorative motifs inbetween the arms; the reverse with a central silver medallion, maker marked “Juwiliere Hemmerle Vorm. Elchinger, München”, with eight pressure rivets on the reverse, along with a vertical pinback with a functional hinge/catch assembly, marked “900” for silver content; measuring 66.87 mm x 66.80 mm; weighing 49.8 grams; with flaked enamels on the left arm of the cross; in overall near extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
