A fine quality manufacture Bavarian Royal Merit Order of St. Michael Second Class Breast Star (Königlicher Verdienstorden vom heiligen Michael); c.1900 a silver breast star with a blue enameled center medallion with raised silver gilt lettering, reading “Quis Ut Deus” (Latin - Who [is] like God?), surrounded by an etched silver gilt ring; the reverse plain, with a silver central medallion maker marked “Juweliere Gebrüder Hemmerle, München”, with the vertical pinback marked “800” for silver content; measuring 77.80 mm (w) x 77.21 mm (h); weighing 57.2 grams; with the enamels extremely well preserved, free of cracks and chips, with light patina from age; in overall extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
