An extremely fine quality manufacture 1854-1918 issue Prussian Order of the Red Eagle Third Class (Preußische Roter Adlerorden III. Klasse); a silver gilt cross pattée with four arms constructed of exceptionally fine white enamels; the obverse with a circular enameled medallion depicting a Brandenburg crowned eagle; the reverse with the crowned cipher of King Friedrich Wilhelm III; marked “W” on the base for Wagner manufacture; measuring 38.74 mm (w) x 38.48 mm (h); weighing 15.2 grams (with its ribbon); suspended from a double-looped suspension from its period original 28 mm wide peacetime ribbon - with its ribbon attached (indicating that the 4th Class of the Red Eagle Order was previously awarded to the wearer); with a collector’s paper tag attached to the reverse of the ribbon; extremely well preserved, without chips, cracks, or significant contact marks; in near mint condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
