1) An Austrian c. 1917 Military Merit Medal on Peacetime ribbon; the medal constructed of silver; the obverse with a rightward facing bust of Kaiser Franz Joseph, circumscribed by Latin script; the reverse inscribed “Signum Laudis” (Latin - Sign for Praise) within a wreath consisting of oak and laurel leaves; on a swivel crown and loop suspension from its period original peacetime ribbon- with a collector’s paper tag attached to the reverse of the ribbon; measuring 31.93 mm in diameter; weighing 23.7 grams with its ribbon.
2) An Austrian c. 1917-1918 Military Merit Medal on Wartime ribbon; the medal constructed of silver; the obverse with a rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, , circumscribed by Latin script; the reverse inscribed “Signum Laudis” (Latin - Sign for Praise) within a wreath consisting of oak and laurel leaves; with a medal extension consisting of two Royal crowns; on a loop for suspension and with its period original tri-fold ribbon and triple clasps - with a collector’s paper tag attached to the reverse of the ribbon; measuring 31.16 mm in diameter; weighing 28.4 grams; worn examples in overall near extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
