Measuring 140x83mm, near extremely fine with light scuffing and creasing, and minimal soiling. The card was sent by Werkmeister (artificer) Josef Gross at P.O.W. camp Brady, camp II compound 5, Texas. Seeing as most Texan P.O.W. camps were used for German prisoners taken in northern Africa, and that Camp Brady was established in 1943, it is possible that Gross had been a member of the German Afrika Korps. The recipient is “the chancellery of the Führer” in Berlin. Gross writes that despite his personal circumstances he still observes A.H.’s 55th birthday in loyalty and solidarity. Interestingly the card has been dated to January 21, 1944, whereas A.H.’s birthday was April 20. Maybe Gross thought that the card would take a while to be sent to Germany. And indeed, it was stamped in New York on February 10.
