A fine example of an 1807-1918 issue Baden Military Charles Frederick Merit Order (Militärischer Karl-Friedrich Verdienstorden Bruststern zum Großkreuz); a hollow silver Maltese cross with ball finals, and balls in the crevices of the arms of the cross; the obverse with a gold central medallion depicting a crowned griffin within a silver ring, inscribed “Für Badens Ehre” (German - For the honour of Baden); the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly; measuring 73.57 mm x 72.61 mm; weighing 38.6 grams; attractive patina from age; in overall extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
