In silver, unmarked version, measuring 32.5 mm, three clasps on its original ribbon, the clasps dated ""1859"" (War with Austria), ""1860-61"" (Garibaldi's Expeditions) and ""1866"" (War with Austria), lacquered medal and clasps, contact marks, very fine.

Footnote: The Medal for the Italian Independence Wars and Unification was instituted on March 4, 1865 by Royal Decree No. 2174 and awarded to those who took part in war campaigns for the independence of Italy. This medal replaced all other previously granted medals, except the Crimea, St. Helena, Napoleonic campaigns 1859 and the Expedition of Thousands medals. 

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
