Item #G34463
Measuring 212x298mm, mint condition, in original sleeve, extremely fine condition with light scuffing and discolouration. With original envelope that has come apart into two pieces. The certificate states that Sergeant Don Francisco Obiol Antonino has been awarded the Order of the German Eagle Merit Medal with Swords, the lowest class of the German Eagle Order. It is dated to June 5, 1939 and carries a facsimile of State Minister Otto Meissner (1880–1953).
Footnote: Sergeant Francisco Obiol Antonino served in the Spanish air force and fought in the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, supporting General Franco’s Nationalists. However, it is unknown in which capacity he served in the air force. After receiving the Merit Medal, he was also awarded the next higher decoration, the German Eagle Order 3rd Class with Swords. It is possible that he later served as part of the Blue Division, just like other Spanish air force members verifiably did, and may have been awarded the 3rd Class for actions on the Eastern Front, but at this point this is just speculation.
