Baden. An Order of the Zähringer Lion & Iron Cross 1914 Medal Group

This is a fine grouping of a first war period medal bar grouping of three medals, awards, and decorations, accompanied by its matching medal bar, as well as two Iron Crosses 1914 First Class. All were acquired from an individual veteran lot.

1) The medal bar consists of 1) An Iron Cross 1914 Second Class “Eisernes Kreuz 1914 2. Klasse”; a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; on loop for suspension; the obverse with a raised central “W”, with the re-institution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm; the reverse with a central oak-leaf branch consisting of three oak leaves, with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbers on the lower arm, a raised Prussian crown on the upper arm, with “FW” in equally raised lettering directly below; measuring 42.98 mm (w) x 42.63 mm (h). 2) An Order of the Zähringer Lion Knight’s Cross First Class with Swords (Orden vom Zähringer Löwen Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern); constructed of silver and silver gilt, consisting of a four-armed star with arabesques between the arms of the cross, the obverse with a green glass cross patee, with a center enameled medallion depicting the ruins of the “Stammschloss Zähringen”;  surrounded by a knurled golden ring; the reverse with a center red enameled medallion bearing a golden rampant lion; on a loop for suspension; measuring 39.89 mm (w) x 39.90 mm (h). 3) A Hindenburg Cross “Ehrenkreuz des Weltkriegs 1914/1918”; a bronzed metal (magntic) cross pattée with crossed swords between the arms of the cross; the obverse inscribed with “1914/1918” within an open-ended laurel wreath; the reverse plain; maker marked with an unknown mark on the reverse; measuring 37.47 mm (w) x 37.34 mm (h); metal core (non-magnetic); suspended from their original ribbons; horizontal pinback; light blue silk backing; measuring 100 mm (w) x 42 mm (h). Accompanied by two medal ribbon bars, one with a ribbon for an Iron Cross 1914 Second Class ribbon and a n Order of the Zähringer Lion ribbon with swords; metal core (magnetic); horizontal pinback; measuring 29 mm (w) x 18 mm (h). The other the same, but with the addition of a ribbon for a Hindenburg Cross with miniature crossed swords; metal core (non-magnetic); horizontal pinback; white backer; measuring 58 mm (w) x 19 mm (h).

2) A private purchase Iron Cross 1914 Second Class “Eisernes Kreuz 1914 2. Klasse”; a cross pattée; valuted; of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central “W”, with the re-institution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm; the reverse etched with the recipients name “Reiser”, with a slender banjo style pinback; marked “800” for silver content; measuring 43.05 mm (w) x 42.80 mm (h); weighing 17.2 grams.

3) An Iron Cross 1914 Second Class “Eisernes Kreuz 1914 2. Klasse”; a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central “W”, with the re-institution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm; the reverse etched with the recipients name “Reiser”, with a slender banjo style pinback; marked “800” for silver content; measuring 43.42 mm (w) x 43.26 mm (h); weighing 15.3 grams.

4) A 1931 “Day of the Regiment 113” Pfingsten in Freiburg badge; in bronze; vertical pinback; maker marked “Wiedmann & Co., Freiburg” on the reverse; measuring 29 mm (w) x 40 mm (h).
