An extremely well preserved example of an Imperial Austrian Second Class Honour Decoration of the Red Cross for Ladies with War Decoration; a multi-piece silver cross of red, white, and green enamels; the obverse consisting of a silver cross with red and white enameled arms, with a central red enameled cross in the centre within a white enameled medallion, circumscribed “Patriae ag Humanitati” (Latin - Country and Humanity), with a war decoration consisting of two laurel leaf stems attached to the obverse, consisting of silver, as well as green and red enamels; the reverse consisting of red and white enamels, with a central white enameled medallion dated “1864-1914”, surrounded by a red enameled ring; on a loop for suspension from its period original and well preserved ladies ribbon; measuring 36.76 mm (w) x 48.39 mm (h); weighing 24.5 grams; light contact marks on the enamels, but free of chips or cracks of any kind; in overall better than extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
