1855-1918 Issue. An example of an early and exquisite manufacture 1855-1918 issue Ludwig Order Breast Star to the Grand Cross (Ludwigorden Bruststern zum Großkreuz); a silver eight-pointed star; the obverse with a central black enameled medallion, inscribed “Gott, Ehre, Vaterland” (German - God, Honour, Fatherland) in raised gold lettering, surrounded by a ring of white enamels with a gold laurel and oak wreath; the reverse with a vertical pinback, a barrel hinge, and a round wire catch; with a central silver medallion fastened to the back of the star via two screws, inscribed “Schnitzspahn in Darmstadt”; measuring 73.49 mm (w) x 72.35 mm (h); patina from age, but otherwise untouched; in near mint condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
