An example of a seldom encountered cased late war issue Knight’s Cross of the War Merit Cross with Swords (Ritterkreuz zum Kriegsverdienstkreuz mit Schwertern); a large Maltese cross in feinzink; on a loop assembly for suspension from its period original full size neck ribbon; the obverse with crossed swords between the arms of the cross and a circular raised border of oak leaves on the obverse with a raised mobile swastika in the center; the reverse with a circular raised border of oak leaves bearing the institution date “1939” in raised numbering; measuring 52.52 mm (w) x 52.65 mm (h); weighing 51.2 grams. Accompanied by its presentation case of issue; constructed of heavy pressed paper, with a dark blue faux leather (leatherette) exterior; functional clasp closure, with an intact fabric hinge cover, and a fully functional metal hinge; measuring 139 mm (w) x 182 mm (h); in overall near extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
