(Militär St. Heinrichs Orden Knight’s Cross). 1918-1921 Issue. A Maltese cross constructed of silver gilt; the obverse with a central enameled medallion depicting St. Hentry wielding a tri-pronged scepter and an orb, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, inscribed “Frid(ericus), Aug(ustus) d(ei) Garatia) Rex Sax(oniae) Instrauravit (Latin - Frederick August by the Grace of God, King of Saxony); with the outer edges of the Maltese cross in white enamels and green enameled florets between the arms of the cross; the reverse with a silver gilt and enameled center applique, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, inscribed “Virtuti in Bello” (Latin - For bravery in war); suspended from a hollow swivel crown suspension; with a horizontally-pierced ball and ring suspension from its period original ribbon - with a collector’s paper tag attached to the reverse; an unmarked example; measuring 38.40 mm (w) x 54.35 mm (h); weighing 22.0 grams; slight loss of the gilt; in overall better than extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
