1892-1918 Issue. A Gold Maltese cross with white enamels arms, and with Gold lions between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a circular central white enameled medallion with a gold Württemberg crown within a bed of white enamels, surrounded by a ring of red enamels with golden lettering reading “Furchtlos und trew” (German - Fearless and Loyal); the reverse with a circular central white enamel medallion with a gold crowned cipher of King Friedrich I within a bed of white enamels, surrounded by a ring of red enamels with golden lettering reading “Furchtlos und trew”; on a loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with a collector’s tag attached to the reverse; unmarked, but known examples by Firma F. Steinam, Stuttgart exist; measuring 34.26 mm (w) x 34.29 mm (h); weighing 9.4 grams; in virtually mint condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
