Transjordan, Kingdom. A Supreme Order of the Renaissance, 1st Class Grand Cordon, c.1952

(Wisan an-Nahada). Instituted 1917 - Emir Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca. Type II. Badge of the order of an ornate design, consisting of an intricate silver star with green palms with yellow enameled buds, obverse centre in red enamel with inlay-ed script, centre piece presents the crossed flags of Jordan with Motto HIS SERVANT, EL-HUSSEIN BIN ALI, with silver beaded boardering, suspension with a crowned vertical flag in silver gilt and enamels, elongated sash suspension loop silver hallmarked with Arabic hallmark denoting 800 silver content, measuring 59 mm (w) x 93 mm (h - inclusive of suspension), on original period Type I sash with unusual blue centre band, extremely fine. Accompanied by a star of the order of equally ornate design, with enameled palms and yellow buds, red enameled boardering with crossed flags centre, reverse with dual stays and pin assembly, measuring 76 mm (w) x 83 mm (h), with minor wear, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Supreme Order of the Renaissance is the second knighthood order of the Kingdom of Jordan. The order was instituted in 1917 by Emir Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca. According to correspondence between the British Foreign Office and their agent in Jeddah in 1924, """"The Order of the Nahda was established to commemorate the revolt of the Hejaz against the Turks. The first distribution was made on October 15th, 1918, when Sharif Hussein declared himself King. It is supposed to be confined to people who actually took part in the revolt."""" When Hussein's successor Ali was overthrown by the Sultan of Nejd, his son Abdullah continued to issue the award as Emir of Transjordan. The Supreme Order of the Renaissance is awarded in six classes: Grand Cordon with Brilliants / Special 1st Class; Grand Cordon / 1st Class; Grand Officer / 2nd Class; Commander / 3rd Class; Officer / 4th Class; and Knight / 5th Class; plus a medal.
