(Ordine Equestre per il merito civile e militare San Marino protettore della repubblica). Instituted in 1859. In silver gilt with blue and white enamels, hand painted portrait of San Marino surrounded by the Italian inscription ""SAN MARINO PROTETTORE"" (San Marino Protector) on the obverse, San Marino coat-of arms surrounded by the Italian inscription "" MERITO CIVILE E MILITARE"" (Civil and Military Merit) on the reverse, measuring 56 mm (w) x 89 mm (h -inclusive of its crown suspension), with elongated suspension loop, with its original full-length sash, very fine.

Footnote: The Order of San Marino (AKA Civil and Military Equestrian Order of Saint Marinus) is an Order of Merit of San Marino. Established on August 13, 1859, the order is presented for outstanding civil or military services to the Republic, or for humanitarian, artistic, political or scientific accomplishment. The order is presented in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
