(Kriegskreuz für Zivilverdienste, III. Grades). Instituted 16.8.1915. A cross constructed of silver with white enameled arms and an oak wreath between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a central white enameled medallion inscribed “FJI” for Franciscus Josephus Primus, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “MERITO CIVILI TEMPORE BELI MCMXV” (Latin - Civilian Merit during War); the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge and catch assembly; marked “A.R” for Anton Reiter on the pin as well as on the reverse of the cross, along with a “K” and an Austrian silver hallmark denoting “900” silver purity and Viennese manufacture; measuring 44.83 mm (w) x 44.82 mm (h). Accompanied by its presentation case; constructed of heavy red cardstock, with a red faux leather (leatherette) exterior, with a lined and padded interior lid, a recessed medal bed, a functional spring catch with stud release, intact interior fabric hinge catch, and a functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 70 mm (w) x 70 mm (h); in overall extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
