Spain, Second Republic. A Star of the Royal Hispanic American Academy of Sciences, c.1935

(Medalla de la Real Academia Hispano Americana de Ciencias, Artes y Letras). Instituted 1875. 1931-1939 issued. A six-pointed star in silver, convex, obverse centre depicting a detailed symbol of the Academy in bronze gilt, surrounded by an enameled red border featuring the Latin inscription SCIENTIA MUNDI LUX (The Science Brightens to the World), surmounted by a typical of time period Spanish Mural crown also in bronze gilt, reverse with pin assembly and two stays, measuring 69.32 mm (w) x 78.84 mm (h), minor red enamel loss, missing the maker’s cartouche on the reverse, with toned silver and bronze gilt, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters of Cádiz, has its roots in the former Royal Academy of Sciences and Letters, founded in 1875; however, it was created as Hispanic American in 1909. It is currently active, and it is issued only in one grade, in recognition of those who served to the conservation and development of the Spanish language.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
