Footnote: Private Robert Carroll was an Acting Cook in the Hospital Corps during the Spanish-American War and for his service, he was awarded the Army Spanish Campaign Medal, number 7290, issued on April 1, 1916 and the Army of Cuban Occupation Medal, number 2952, issued on March 25, 1916. He was serving as a Private with the 27th Company, Coast Artillery Company, as part of the 9th Regiment, when he was awarded the Philippine Insurrection Medal, number 4707 and the Army China Campaign Medal, number 321, issued on July 24, 1908. In regards to the Army China Campaign Medal, the official list acknowledges that Carroll was to be issued with number 320, however, he was issued with number 321. First Sergeant Gottfried Hug should have been issued with number 321. The two men were in the same company and the error likely occurred when they handed out the medals, as the men really didn't pay that much attention to the number impressed on the edge and matching them to the list.
