Instituted 1789. (Riband of the Three Orders). A badge of most exquisite quality and attention to detail, masterfully executed in Gold, presenting the crests of the Military Order of the Christ, the Military Order of St.Benedict of Avis, and the Order of St.James of the Sword, each finely done in red, green, and white enamels, oval Gold base entirely hand etched and carved, reverse mirroring the obverse in both appearance and quality, with a three dimensional Portuguese Royal Crown containing a red enameled orb, jewels in red and green enamels, measuring 51 mm (w) x 93 mm (h - inclusive of crown and horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), 74.0 grams, mint. Accompanied by original case of issue, wooden framed pearl shaped with blue leather wrapping, red velvet medal bed, interior lid marked Spink & Sons LTD, 30 Cornhill, E.C. & 17 & 18 Piccadilly W., London, case is extremely fine.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
