(Guelphen Orden, Komutkreuz, mit Schwertern). Instituted 1815. Exhibiting the stylistic and manufacturing characteristics of French production, consisting of a silver Andreas cross with crossed swords, the obverse with a raised central red and green enameled medallion and a separately affixed silver Hanoverian horse, surrounded by a blue ring of enamels, inscribed with orders Motto “NEC ASPERA TERRENT” (Latin - Not Afraid of Difficulties) in Gold lettering, with green enameled laurels with red berries; the reverse plain, with eight rivets, missing its reverse attachment point, however showing the filed remains of a horizontal pinback, measuring 75.40 mm (w) x 74.76 mm (h); weighing 79.2 grams; with some loss to the enamels on the wreath as well as with the horse loose, in overall near very fine condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
