Saxony, Kingdom. An Order of the White Falcon, Grand Cross Star, by Bury & Leonhard, c.1850

(Bruststern zum Großkreutz des Hausorden vom Weißen Falken). Instituted 1732 by Duke Ernest Augustus. Constructed of Gold, silver, and multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a leftward-facing white enameled falcon inlaid on a richly-textured Gold background, bordered by a notched raised Gold ring, in turn ringed by a finely-enameled sapphire-blue border with the Motto “VIGILANDO ASCENDIMUS” (“Through Vigilance We Ascend”) in Gold lettering, within a final notched raised Gold ring, projecting from the centre are the arms of a Point Cross constructed of a vibrant emerald-green enamel within a Gold frame, the obverse decorations are fixed to an eight-pointed, multi-rayed star of silver construction, the reverse bears a functioning barrel hinge with a tapered vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, with four rivets holding the obverse features in place evenly distributed through the star rays, clearly visible on the reverse is a signature-style maker’s mark reading “Bury & Leonhard, Hofjuwelier Hanau”, measuring 79.5 mm (w) x 78.5 mm (h), some tarnishing of the silver features evident but presents in an otherwise extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
