Cuba, Republic. An Order of Honor & Merit of the National Red Cross, by Rothe, Grand Cross Star, c.1915

(La Orden de Honor y Mérito de la Cruz Roja Cubana). Instituted 1913. 1913-1978 issue. Of high Austrian manufacture, a fine eight-pointed faceted star in silver gilt, obverse featuring a nicely enameled red Latin Cross, depicting five-pointed silver star in each quadrant, centre medallion exhibiting a handmade Cuban coat of arms, surrounded by the Latin inscription INTER INIMICOS CHARITAS 1909 (Charity between Enemies), reverse with flat pin assembly, hallmarked by multiple Vienna silver assay mark, with Austrian-Hungarian hallmark denoting 750/1000 fineness from 1872 until 1922, marked by maker’s mark of Friedrich Rothe, measuring 89.21 mm (w) x 88.62 mm (h), presenting minor oxidation on the obverse, enamel having been lacquered, near extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order of Honor and Merit of the National Red Cross was instituted by presidential decree on January 31, 1913. It was awarded for meritorious services according to the rank of the recipient. The Order was abolished in 1977.
