Brazil. An Order of the Rose, Grand Cross Sash

(Ordem da Rosa). Instituted on 17 October 1829. A mid 20th Century sash fabricated from silk, incorporating a decorative moiré pattern, with a wide pink field in the centre, flanked by white stripes on either side, with stripes in pink along the side edges, large bow-tie at the bottom end, measuring 102 mm wide x 840 mm in length, vibrant colours, intact stitching, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Imperial Order of the Rose is a Brazilian order of chivalry, instituted by Emperor Pedro I of Brazil on October 17, 1829, to commemorate his marriage to Amélie of Leuchtenberg. On March 22, 1890, the order was cancelled as a national order by the interim government of United States of Brazil. Since the deposition in 1889 of the last Brazilian monarch, Emperor Pedro II, the order continues as a house order being awarded by the Heads of the House of Orleans-Braganza, pretenders to the defunct throne of Brazil. The current Brazilian Imperial Family is split into two branches Petrópolis and Vassouras, and as a consequence, the Grand Mastership of the Order is disputed between those two branches.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
