(1938-45 Issue). A large silver gilt eight pointed star, each arm composed of a cluster of five individual rays, overlaid with a multiple ray silver star with alternating smooth and faceted rays, obverse centre presenting a red enameled field with seven stars denoting a third class award, with an outer surround with nine thunder clouds in white enamels, reverse with cartouche in Chinese characters stating bronze grade, suspended by thunder cloud and star suspension, measuring 78 mm (w) x 124 mm (h - inclusive of both suspension features), on elongated loop with period ribbon, very fine. Accompanied by the case of issue, wooden framed and wrapped in maroon covering, lid with hand painted Chinese characters, interior with fitted medal bed, strong hinge and catch, with two old cracks to lid, fair.

 

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
