(Greiffen-Orden, Bruststern zum Komturkreuz). Instituted in 1884 by Großherzog Friedrich Franz IV. (Issued 1884-1918). An eight pointed multi-rayed star alternating between strands of larger rays and smaller rays, the obverse with a central pebbled medallion in silver gilt bearing a leftward facing griffin, surrounded by a knurled ring, a broad red enameled ring inscribed “ALTIOR ADVERSIS” (Against all Odds) in silver gilt, the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly, marked “H. Rose, Schwerin” on the reverse, measuring 79.22 mm (w) x 80.46 mm (h), weighing 65.2 grams, extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
