(Real y Militar Orden de San Hermenegildo). Instituted 1814 by King Ferdinand VII. Alfonso XIII’s reign issue. A fine quality manufacture miniature, consisting of a ball-tipped four-armed cross in silver gilt, featuring sets of three silver rays in each quadrant, obverse exhibiting a gilt figure of St. Hermenegildo riding a horse on a light blue enameled background, encircled by a gilt enameled green laurel wreath, with plain reverse, measuring 15.17 (w) x 17.49 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), presenting minor silver oxidation, accompanied by original ribbon suspended from a traditional Spanish-style horizontal hanger with pinback, very good.
Footnote: The Royal and Military Order of St. Hermenegildo was founded in Spain by King Ferdinand VII after the end of the Peninsular War, on November 28, 1814. It was established in recognition of either Spanish or foreign military personnel who finally defeated the French army of Napoleon, and reconstituted the reign of Ferdinand VII.
