(Medalla al Mérito). Instituted in 1863 by Maximilian I. 1865-1867 issue. Military Division. An early rounded medal in silver, the obverse showing the head of Maximilian I facing right with the surrounding inscription MAXIMILIANO EMPERADOR (Maximilian Emperor), the reverse presenting in three lines the inscription AL MERITO MILITAR (To Military Merit), surrounded by a laurel wreath, the bottom stamped by the name of the artist NAVALON.G., presenting presumably number of museum “4030” on the rim, measuring 32.81 mm (w) x 35.18 mm (inclusive ring suspension), with wear and toned silver, suspended by the original silk ribbon, poor.
Footnote: The Military Merit Medal was instituted on March 10, 1865 by Maximilian I. The Imperial government authorised one basic medal in recognition of its supporters and allies. The medal was manufacture in a civilian and military version.
